An AEO platform measures: it puts your buyer questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features on a schedule and reports where you are mentioned and who is mentioned instead. A GEO agency changes the result: it rewrites pages, fixes the business identity engines read, and earns the mentions that make them confident. A Cyprus SME with nobody to do that work should hire the agency first. A business with a marketer who can act on the data can start with the platform.

This question arrives in our Search Console word for word: should I hire a GEO agency or buy a self-serve AEO platform? It is the right question asked slightly the wrong way round. The two are not alternatives. One is a thermometer and the other is the treatment, and which you need first depends on whether anyone in your business can act on a reading.

What does a self-serve AEO platform do?

It tracks how AI engines answer your buyers' questions. The tools sold as AEO, GEO or AI visibility platforms do four things:

  • Prompt tracking. You enter the questions your buyers ask. The platform puts them to several engines every day or week and records the answers.
  • Share of voice. How frequently your brand is named across those answers, against named competitors.
  • Source analysis. Which domains the engines cite for your questions: your site, competitors, directories, media, forums.
  • Recommendations. Suggested content or fixes, generated from the gaps.

The first three are measurement, and the good platforms do them well. They solve a real problem: AI answers move from day to day. Semrush tracked 81 new pages for 30 days (published December 2025): Google AI Mode cited 48 of them at the peak on day six and 21 by day 30. A single manual check tells you little. A platform that asks the same question 30 times a month gives you a trend.

How can you track AI visibility without a platform?

With three sources that cost nothing but time, which is more than the sales pages suggest:

SourceWhat it showsWhat it does not show
Google Search Console, generative AI reportImpressions for each of your pages inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, by country, device and dateClicks, the questions asked, or competitors
Bing Webmaster Tools, AI PerformanceCitations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, the pages cited, and the phrases the engine used to find youChatGPT or Perplexity
A fixed list of buyer questions, asked by hand each monthWho is named and which sources are cited, on any engine you chooseDay-to-day movement

Bing's report is the only place an engine tells you, first hand, the number of times it cited you. For a Cyprus SME tracking 10 to 25 questions, these three sources cover the ground. A platform earns its fee when you track hundreds of questions, several markets or a dozen competitors. Before tracking anything, check that engines can read the site at all: our AI readability check shows what ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google see on a page.

What does a GEO agency do that a platform cannot?

The work. A dashboard can tell a Limassol law firm that it is absent from 22 of 25 answers. It cannot do any of the following:

  1. Rewrite the pages. Direct answers, question headings, tables, dated sources. A platform can suggest a topic. Somebody still has to know the subject and write it.
  2. Repair the business identity. The same name, address and phone number on every listing, Organization markup, the professional register, and the transliteration problem that splits Cyprus addresses into two or three spellings. The test is in our known-entity check.
  3. Earn mentions. Ahrefs found in May 2025 that brand mentions across the web correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, three times the figure for backlinks. A mention in the sector press is a conversation with an editor, not a feature of a tool.
  4. Fix what stops crawlers reading the site. In our September 2026 check of 20 Cyprus hotel websites, one blocked every crawler except Google's and one was an empty page without JavaScript. No dashboard edits a robots.txt file.
  5. Decide what not to do. A tool optimises for the metric it shows. An adviser tells you that a question with no buyers behind it is not worth winning.

There is a structural reason this matters for small businesses. Semrush studied 50,000 brands in ChatGPT in July 2026 and found that 85% of 1,094 categories had no clear owner. The openings exist. Taking one means doing the work on a narrow subject, and that is labour.

When is an AEO platform enough?

  • You have an in-house marketer or writer with time to act on what it shows.
  • Your site is technically sound and your listings are already consistent.
  • You track enough questions, markets or competitors that checking by hand is unrealistic.
  • You want evidence before committing to a larger budget.

When is a platform the wrong purchase?

  • Nobody in the business will act on the readings. A tool nobody opens after the second month is money spent on a reading nobody took.
  • The basics are missing. Nine of the 20 Cyprus professional-services homepages in our check of accounting and law firm websites carried no structured data, and eight had no meta description. A platform will report that symptom every day without curing it.
  • You track fewer than 25 questions in one market. The three sources in the table above will tell you the same thing.

How much does a GEO agency cost compared with an AEO platform?

A platform costs hundreds to low thousands of dollars a year; an agency costs thousands of euro, because the fee includes the labour. Platform prices change and are quoted in dollars, so check the vendor's own page before you budget. As one example, OtterlyAI's pricing page, read on 25 September 2026, lists 29 dollars a month for 15 tracked prompts, 189 for 100 and 489 for 400, billed monthly. Profound publishes no price for its enterprise plan. At the first two rates, tracking 15 to 100 questions costs about 350 to 2,300 dollars a year.

Agency prices in Cyprus are easier to pin down, because four agencies publish them. A small-business SEO retainer that includes the GEO work runs from 500 to 1,800 euro a month, and an audit costs 600 to 2,500 euro, as set out in how GEO pricing compares to SEO pricing in Cyprus. Over a year that is 6,000 to 21,600 euro. The fair comparison is the platform plus the salary hours of whoever acts on it.

How should a Cyprus SME decide?

Your situationBuy firstWhy
No marketing staff, site built years agoAn audit, then an agencyThe constraint is work, not data
One marketer, sound site, no AI visibility dataThe three no-cost sources, then a platform if the list outgrows themYou can act on readings, so start reading
Marketing team, several markets or brandsA platform, with an agency for identity and mention workScale makes manual tracking unrealistic
Regulated firm where partners approve every wordAn agency that drafts for approvalA tool's generated suggestions will not pass compliance

Whichever you buy, keep the accounts in your own name: Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, the platform login. The data is the asset, and it should stay when a supplier goes. That is a condition of how we run SEO and AI search, and the wider picture of the two disciplines is in our guide to GEO vs SEO.

Key takeaways

  • A platform measures where AI engines mention you. An agency changes it. They are not substitutes.
  • Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a fixed list of questions asked by hand cover a Cyprus SME tracking up to 25 questions.
  • A platform is the wrong first purchase when nobody will act on the data or the site basics are missing.
  • Compare the agency fee with the platform plus the hours of whoever does the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AEO platform? It is software that puts a list of buyer questions to AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features on a schedule, then reports how frequently your brand is mentioned, which competitors appear and which sources the engines cite. It measures AI visibility. It does not change it.

Can I track AI visibility without buying a tool? Yes, for a modest list of questions. The generative AI report in Google Search Console shows impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Bing Webmaster Tools reports Copilot citations and the phrases used to find you. A fixed list of questions asked by hand each month covers ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Do GEO agencies use AEO platforms themselves? Agencies with clients in several markets do, because tracking hundreds of questions by hand does not scale. For a single-market SME with up to 25 questions, the no-cost sources cover it, and a good agency will say so instead of adding a tool fee to the retainer. Ask what the tool shows that Search Console and Bing do not.

Is a platform's content recommendation good enough to publish? As a starting point for a writer who knows the subject, yes. As finished copy, no. Google's guidance on helpful content asks whether content provides "original information, reporting, research, or analysis", and a generated suggestion has none of its own. For regulated firms, every published answer also needs a partner's approval.

What should I ask a GEO agency before hiring it? Ask for last month's change list from a current client with the URLs, how mentions are earned, who writes the content, which accounts you will own, and how AI visibility is measured. Google's guidance on hiring an SEO adds a plain warning: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."

GEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference? Google's Answer, Our Data and Where AEO Fits

SEO (search engine optimisation) earns your page a ranked link in Google's results, and success is a click. GEO (generative engine optimisation) earns it a citation or a mention inside an answer written by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews, and success is being named. GEO is built on SEO, not instead of it: Google calls optimising for its AI features "still SEO". AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the narrowest part of GEO: being the one answer to one question.

What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained, With a Checklist for Cyprus Businesses

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of getting your business named when someone asks an AI engine a question in your field. SEO competes for a place in a list of links. AEO competes for a place inside the answer that ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity or Gemini writes, where a few businesses are named and the rest are not. In practice it means pages that answer questions directly, and a business identity the engines can confirm.

How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT: A Guide for Cyprus Accounting, Law and Fiduciary Firms

To get your business cited by ChatGPT, let OpenAI's search crawler read your site, give every question a client asks its own page with the answer in the first two sentences, keep your firm's name and details identical on every listing, and earn mentions on the registers, directories and publications the engine already reads. In our September 2026 test, ChatGPT answered specific questions about Cyprus firms from the firms' own pages, and "best firm" questions from directories.
